My new smart scale bricked itself after a firmware update last night.
It's now stuck on a boot loop screen and the company's support chat just told me to 'wait for a future patch', so what's a good backup scale under $40 that actually works offline?

That's incredibly frustrating, especially when the fix is just to wait. What brand of scale was it, so I know what to avoid? For a backup, have you looked at basic mechanical scales? They never need an update and just work.

Avoid that whole mess and just get a good old doctor's office scale. The kind with the little weights you slide. Mine's from the 70s, weighs in pounds only, and will outlive us all. It doesn't connect to wifi, it doesn't need a firmware update to tell me I gained five pounds over the holidays, it just sits there and works. Every smart scale I've tried eventually becomes a very expensive doorstop.
