Spent $200 on a fancy infrared thermometer and it's the best thing I ever bought for stripping

I was stripping an old dresser with a heat gun and kept burning the wood, even on low. Got the thermometer to check surface temps, and it turns out I was hitting 500 degrees in spots. Now I keep it at 350 max, and the old finish comes off clean with zero scorch marks. It completely changed how I approach any heat-based stripping job. Anyone else use one of these, or do you just go by feel?

Total game changer, right? I scorched a door frame before I got one... now I just do a quick check every few minutes.

Yeah, "scorched a door frame" is exactly why I got one too, @ruby494.
