Heard a guy at the break table say all green sand is basically the same

I was grabbing coffee yesterday and overheard two guys from the core room talking. One said, 'You can buy the cheap stuff, it all does the same job.' That stuck with me because last year we had a big run of castings with bad surface finish. We switched from a generic green sand mix to a specific brand with better bentonite, and our scrap rate dropped by 15 percent. It's not just dirt, the mix really matters. What's the biggest quality jump you've seen from changing your sand?
