My old steel frame had a crack, and I had to choose between a full repair or a new bike.
The crack was near the bottom bracket on my 1985 Schwinn, and my local frame builder in Tacoma quoted me $300 to fix it. I decided to go for the repair instead of buying something new, and I spent a whole weekend stripping the paint myself to save some cash. Seeing the fresh brass brazing on that old steel felt like giving it a second life. Has anyone else gone through a major frame fix and been happy they did?

Honestly, is a 40 year old frame even safe after a repair like that? I'd be worried the metal is just tired out everywhere else. Spending $300 plus all that work seems like a lot for a bike that could crack again next year. Tbh I'd have just looked for a used modern frame instead.

Metal fatigue is a real thing, but it's not a given. A good frame builder can check the whole frame. Some of these old frames were built to last forever anyway.
