My chain went from noisy to quiet after a simple change

For months my bike had this annoying clicking sound when I pedaled hard. I tried cleaning the chain with my Park Tool brush, but it didn't help. Last week I finally used a proper chain checker tool and saw it was stretched past 0.75%. I put on a new chain and the noise was gone after the first ride. Has anyone else fixed a weird noise just by checking chain wear?

My old chain hit 0.8% before I finally swapped it. That same clicking sound went away overnight.

Wait, 0.8 percent? I'm honestly amazed your drivetrain was even still moving at that point. That's way past the "replace me" warning and deep into the "this is going to snap any second" zone. I've seen chains give up way earlier than that. You got super lucky it just clicked and didn't skip a tooth or break completely.
