I hit 10,000 miles on a chain that everyone said would snap at 5,000
Everyone in my local group swears you gotta swap your chain every 3,000 miles or it's gonna fail on you. I ran a KMC X11 on my gravel bike here in Portland for a full year and just crossed 10,000 miles with zero issues. Checked it with a chain wear gauge last week and it's still within spec, so I'm keeping it going. Anyone else push a chain way past what the forums say?

Wait, have you ever had a buddy who just does the opposite of what everyone says? My friend Mark ran a SRAM chain on his cross bike for like 11,000 miles before it finally gave out. He'd tell everyone "it's fine" while we'd all be at group rides watching him shift like a maniac. The crazy part is he never even lubed it properly, just hit it with WD-40 sometimes. It finally snapped on a steep climb in the Gorge, but by then he'd already proven everyone wrong.

WD-40 isn't really a lubricant though, it's more of a water displacer that happens to have some light oil in it. Your buddy just got lucky with that chain setup honestly.
