Just figured out I was over-tightening my drill chuck for months

Kept stripping bits left and right until my buddy Tim at the hardware shop said to just give it a light snug instead of cranking it like a jar lid. Has anyone else wrecked a dozen phillips heads before realizing this trick?

Wait, were you using DeWalt or Milwaukee bits when you were stripping them out? I stripped three of their impact rated phillips bits before I figured out the same thing, and I was so mad because those bits aren't cheap. It's crazy how tight I thought I had to make it, like the drill would somehow fly apart if I didn't crank it down with all my might. Now I just give the chuck a gentle twist and it holds fine, never had a bit slip since I stopped treating it like a lug nut on a truck tire.

Right? It's like we all went through some secret training program that taught us to gorilla grip every tool we own. I was using some no-name brand bits I grabbed in a hurry, which made it even funnier when they stripped out because I figured they were just cheap crap. Turns out my death grip was the problem, not the bits. Now I just whisper sweet nothings to the chuck and give it a gentle little twist, and boom, it holds better than when I was cranking it down like I was trying to break a nut loose on a semi truck. Funny how the harder you try sometimes, the worse it gets.
