My sewing teacher was dead wrong about cheap fabric scissors
Took a class at Joann last spring and the instructor kept saying buy the $60 Gingher shears or don't bother. Well I picked up a pair of $12 Fiskars instead and guess what? They cut just as clean through cotton and denim. Six months in and I still haven't sharpened them once. She almost made me drop $100 on something I didn't need. Has anyone else had a teacher push expensive gear that turned out to be overkill?

That "buy the $60 Gingher shears or don't bother" line really gets me. I fell for the same thing in my first quilting class, spent almost $80 on some fancy scissors that honestly weren't any better than my old $10 pair. Your six months with no sharpening on the Fiskars is a good point too, I have had to take my expensive ones in twice already. Feels like they just want you to spend more than you have to.

Lisa is spot on with this one. My first pair of "good" scissors cost me a week's worth of coffee and they weren't any sharper than the ones I already had. Now I just use whatever pair I find at the thrift store and sharpen them myself with a cheap stone. Pretty sure my fancy shears are just sitting in a drawer somewhere making me feel bad about my life choices.
