Warning: I just read a report about elevator door reopening devices failing after 200,000 cycles
I was looking through some old inspection bulletins from the state safety board last night. One from 2019 had a case study of a hospital elevator in Cleveland where the door reopening device failed. The report said the infrared sensor passed a basic test, but the mechanism that actually stops the door had worn out after about 200,000 cycles. They found the plastic cam was completely sheared. I never thought to check that specific part during a routine service. How often do you guys actually inspect the physical stop mechanism, not just the beam?

Check the cam wear during annuals, not just the beam.

Wait, people are skipping the cam check? That's a huge part of the inspection! I can't believe someone would just look at the beam and call it good. Good call pointing that out, @felix98. The cam wear tells you so much about the real load history and alignment issues. Skipping it is just asking for a nasty surprise later on.
