Update: I got a 1980s Otis controller to talk to a modern laptop by using a $15 USB-to-serial adapter from the hardware store, not the $200 shop tool.
The old diagnostic port on this unit in a Boston apartment building was giving me gibberish until I manually set the baud rate to 9600 in the terminal software, so is this a legit fix or am I just asking for trouble down the line?

Used to think you needed the expensive tool, but that exact trick saved my butt last year.

Wait, "saved my butt last year" @spencer_webb? That trick must have been a total game changer for a real problem. I'm shocked it actually worked that well in a pinch. Makes you wonder what else we're overpaying for.
