That old guy who taught me how to desolder without a pump

I was working on a vintage stereo receiver last summer at a shop in Austin and this retired radio guy named Frank came in. He watched me struggle with a stuck joint for like 10 minutes then told me to just use a piece of copper braid and some flux instead of my cheap solder sucker. It worked way better than I expected, has anyone else had luck with old timer hacks like that?
