My uncle swore by using a pencil eraser to clean cartridge pins

He told me it was a 'pro tip from the 80s' when I was trying to fix an old Sega Genesis last month. I tried it on the cartridge connector and ended up with graphite dust everywhere, making the contact issues worse. What's the weirdest piece of outdated repair advice you've ever been given?
