I was wrong about using wire nuts for every single connection

For years, I'd twist on a wire nut for any splice, thinking it was the only right way. Then I had to fix a failed connection in a damp crawl space last fall, and the inspector pointed out the corrosion. He said, 'In a spot like this, you want a proper waterproof connector.' I switched to using those heat shrink butt splices with sealant for any outdoor or wet location work. What's your go-to for damp environment splices?

Honestly though, how damp are we talking? Like a little basement must or full-on puddle splash zone? I've seen wire nuts last for ages in some pretty gross spots before they actually fail. That inspector sounds a bit extra lol. Sure, the fancy heat shrink stuff is good, but is it always worth the hassle and extra cost for a crawl space that's just kinda humid?

Tried the heat shrink once, never looked back.
