Textbooks said 10th grade reading level, my students tested at 6th
I pulled Lexile data for my 8th period class in Houston and the class average was 890L, but our district science textbook sits around 1100L. That gap explains why half my kids zone out during chapter 4 on photosynthesis no matter how many videos I show. Why do publishers still push materials that assume kids read two years above where they actually are?

You mentioned the class average is 890L and the book sits at 1100L. That's a real problem, but I'm wondering something. When you pulled that data, did you check if the reading level changes a lot between chapters? Like maybe the photosynthesis chapter is way harder than the rest of the book, and that's why the gap feels so huge right there. Or is the whole book just sitting at that level the whole time? Because if it's just one rough chapter, you could maybe front-load vocabulary before that section and close the gap a bit. But if it's the whole book, then the publisher basically wrote it for a different school, not your kids.

Lexile scores for books are usually a single number for the whole thing, so that 1100L is averaged across all chapters. It doesn't tell you if photosynthesis is a 1300L beast while the intro chapter sits at 900L. Honestly, the only way to know is to run each chapter through a readability tool yourself, which takes some time but gives you a real answer. If the gap is just one or two sections, then front-loading vocab makes sense and can work. But if the whole book hovers near 1000L or above, the publisher just aimed at a different grade level. That means you're stuck doing a lot of adapting either way, just less of it if it's one rough chapter.
