Just caught a student using an AI shortcut for history essays and I'm rethinking my whole approach

I found out my 10th grader used ChatGPT to write a paper on the Civil War last week, so I sat him down and showed him how to use it as a research assistant instead. Has anyone else had luck turning these tools into learning aids rather than banning them outright?

Man, that's a tough spot to be in... catching them red handed like that. It's good you didn't just blow up at him though, a lot of parents would lose it. Showing him how to use it better probably stuck with him way more than a lecture would have. Just gotta keep an eye on it, you know? These tools aren't going anywhere.

I had a similar thing happen with my daughter a few years back with ChatGPT. She was using it to write her book reports for school, word for word. Instead of getting upset, I sat down and showed her how to use it as a starting point for her own ideas. We worked together on a report about the California Gold Rush, and she learned way more than just copying and pasting. It's not about banning the tools, it's about teaching them how to use them the right way before bad habits set in.
