I thought those 'learn a language by watching TV' apps were just a gimmick

I tried one called LingoPix for a month, mostly because my friend in Madrid said it helped her. I was sure it would be a waste of time, but I started picking up full phrases from Spanish shows without even trying to memorize them. It just sort of clicks after a while, which really surprised me. Has anyone else had a good run with something like this, or did you find it didn't work for you?
