My father in law swore by duct tape for plumbing and it cost me $80
He said 'duct tape fixes everything' when I had a small leak under my kitchen sink in Cleveland. I wrapped it tight around the pipe joint and it held for about 3 days before spraying water all over my cabinets. The water damage soaked through the particle board and I had to replace a whole 4-foot section of cabinet flooring. Turns out duct tape is for ducts not water pipes, and I should have just spent $4 on a new compression ring instead. Anyone else get burned by a relative's 'pro tip' that made things worse?

Nah, duct tape holds up fine if you wrap it right.

@fiona130 I gotta push back a little here. Duct tape will get you to the hardware store, sure, but wrapping it right only goes so far in wet weather or direct sun. The glue gets gummy and slides off, especially on something like a garden hose or a car mirror. I've had duct tape fail on a camping tarp after one night of rain. That's why I keep a roll of Gorilla Tape in my glovebox now, that stuff actually sticks when it matters.
