Caulk gun angle feedback from a painter saved my baseboards
I was re-caulking the baseboards in my hallway after pulling up old carpet, and no matter how careful I was, the bead looked thick in spots and thin in others. A painter friend walked by, glanced at my work, and said I was holding the gun too parallel to the wall, that you need to lead with the tip at a 45 degree angle and pull, not push. I changed my grip right there and it made a huge difference, the line came out even and smooth without me having to smooth it with my finger afterward. The other thing he mentioned was to cut the nozzle at a steep angle, not just snip it flat, because that lets the bead start and stop cleaner at corners. I've since done two more rooms and the finish looks way more professional, I'm actually not embarrassed to have people look close anymore. What do you all do when you need a straight bead but don't have a steady hand, any tricks besides the obvious wet finger method?
