TIL the dollar store canned chili makes a solid base for a whole pot of weeknight dinners
I always walked right past the canned chili at the Dollar Tree near my place in Tucson because I figured it was just bland mush in a can, but about three weeks back I grabbed two cans just to have something in the pantry. Turns out if you dump both cans in a pot with a can of diced tomatoes, a packet of taco seasoning, and a cup of those dried elbow noodles from the same aisle, you get a pretty hearty chili mac for under four bucks total. I let it simmer about fifteen minutes until the noodles soften and it fed me and my roommate with a bowl left over for lunch. The texture is way better than I expected once the pasta thickens it up, and I added a handful of shredded cheese on top which pushed it over the edge. I have made it twice more since then and even tossed in a can of corn one time, which honestly might be the move. For anyone who has tried the other canned stuff from there, is the beef stew worth grabbing or should I stick with what works?
