Tiling that backsplash myself was a disaster last month

I was in my kitchen in Phoenix trying to lay subway tile straight. The level said it was good but after 4 rows I noticed a 1/4 inch gap forming on the right side. Turns out my wall was bowed and I didn't check it with a straight edge first. Had to pull all the tiles off, scrape thinset, and shim the wall before starting over. Has anyone else messed up a simple tile job cause the wall wasn't flat?

Did you use modified thinset for that subway tile... I think you're supposed to let it set up a little bit before you really start working it around. Not trying to be a know-it-all but I've had way better luck letting the thinset tack up for like 5-10 minutes before setting tile. Makes it stick way better and gives you a minute to adjust if something's off.

Oh man, don't remind me, I once set a whole row crooked and called it "modern art"!
