My neighbor in Phoenix said he stopped using joint compound on drywall seams

He told me he switched to a product called Durabond 90 for the first coat because it sets hard and doesn't shrink. I tried it on a ceiling patch last weekend and it was way easier to sand flat after it dried. Anyone else use setting-type mud instead of all-purpose for their taping?

That "sets hard and doesn't shrink" part is the whole game. I had a guy do a skim coat in my old house with regular mud and it cracked in a million hairline webs after a year. He had to come back and redo the whole wall with a setting compound. It was a huge mess. I learned my lesson that day about using the right mud for the job.

Yeah @barbara_butler, it's like that with so many quick fixes.
