I finally found the trick for stripping old paint without the mess
Tried every chemical stripper at the big box store on my 1920s bungalow trim in Portland and nothing worked after the third coat. Then a guy at the salvage yard told me to use a heat gun with a cheap paint scraper and go slow, like 6 inches at a time. Took me two weekends for the whole living room but the wood came out clean, no gouges, no chemical smell. The trick was keeping the heat gun moving steady and not rushing when the paint bubbles up. My neighbor tried it on his door frames last month and said it beat the messy sludge method too. Anyone else use heat guns over strippers for old woodwork, or is there a better way to handle the corners?
