Hot take: people are way too scared to cut into their own drywall

I was putting in a new light fixture in my living room last month and needed to run wire. For years, I'd avoid any project that meant opening up a wall, thinking it was a huge, messy repair job. But after watching a few videos, I bought a small drywall saw for $12 and just went for it. The cut was clean, I did the wiring, and patching it with a scrap piece and some joint compound was honestly easy. The whole fix, start to finish, took maybe two hours of work over two days for drying. Now I see friends putting off simple upgrades because they don't want to 'mess up the wall,' but a patch is a basic skill. It's just spackle and paint. Has anyone else gotten over that mental block and found it opened up a lot more projects?

Totally get that mental block, it feels so permanent. What was the wiring part like for you though? I mean, cutting the hole seems okay but then you're dealing with insulation or old wires, idk. Was finding the studs and running the new cable the harder part?

Wait, you just cut a hole without checking for studs first? That's wild. I always use a stud finder, every single time. My last place had these weird metal studs that would have wrecked my blade. And the insulation... once I hit this old, crumbling stuff that basically turned to dust. Made a huge mess. Finding the path for the new wire is tricky, but at least you're not guessing where the wood is.
