I finally tried using a paint scraper on my old kitchen cabinets after a contractor friend mentioned it.

He said, 'A sharp 2-inch scraper beats sanding for that old varnish,' and he was totally right (it saved me a whole weekend). I got the bulk of the gunk off in about three hours, which I would have spent just setting up sanders. Has anyone else found a hand tool that completely changed a job for them?

That "sharp 2-inch scraper" tip is a good one. For me, it was a basic flat bar for trim work. I used to fight with a pry bar and wreck the drywall. The flat bar gets under the baseboard cleanly and the thin end lets you pull nails out the back without marking the face.

Read a tip about using a putty knife for the same job. It slides under trim without chewing up the wall. Sometimes the simplest tools work the best.
