Warning: I paid $14 for a tube of crack filler that turned into a foam volcano
I had a 6 foot crack in my blacktop near the garage and picked up a tube of self leveling crack filler from the hardware store for $14. The guy at the counter said to just squeeze it in, so I did, and 20 minutes later it foamed up like a science fair volcano all over my shoes. I stood there watching it bubble and spread for 10 minutes while my neighbor laughed from his porch. Ended up scraping the mess off with a putty knife and going back for the sandable kind at $19. Has anyone else had a filler puff up on them like that, or did I just get a bad tube?
Check the temp outside before you blame the tube. Self leveling stuff is picky about weather. If it was above 80 or the blacktop was baking in the sun, that goo cures way too fast and traps gas inside, which is what makes it puff up. Same thing happens if the crack was wet from rain or morning dew, moisture kicks off the reaction early and you get the volcano. I learned this the hard way on a driveway job in July. Next time hit it early in the morning when everything is cool and dry and it should lay flat like it's supposed to.
