That $70 monitor arm clamp destroyed my cheap desk edge
I bolted a heavy gas spring arm to a 1 inch particle board top and after 4 months the corner split clean off, so has anyone else had luck spreading the load with a steel plate or should I just build a freestanding pole mount?

Man, that sucks. I read somewhere that particle board basically turns to mush once a clamp bites into it, no matter how tight you go. A steel plate might buy you time but honestly, that wood is already compromised. Freestanding pole sounds like the smarter move if you can spare the floor space.
