Warning: I was about to drop $180 on a new grinder when a $4 hardware store part fixed the real problem
Last month my hand grinder started wobbling so bad my pour overs tasted like mud and I figured the burrs were shot. I had a tab open with a $180 replacement ready to buy when my buddy Dave, who fixes bikes at a shop in Portland, told me to check the shaft play before spending anything. Turned out the little bronze bushing at the top had worn oval, and a 5/16 bronze flange bushing from the hardware store cost me $4.19. I pressed the old one out with a socket and a C clamp, tapped the new one in, and the wobble was gone in about 20 minutes. My grind is back to being even and honestly I feel silly for almost buying a whole new grinder over a part smaller than a pencil eraser. Anyone else had a cheap fix save them from a dumb purchase, and what part was it?
