Update: Saw a guy at a flea market in Akron fix a bent portafilter with a hammer and wood block
I was at the Hartville flea market last Saturday just killing time and this older guy had a table of beat up coffee stuff, like old moka pots and a couple rusty grinders. What got me though was a bent portafilter he was working on with a regular claw hammer and a scrap of 2x4. He said he paid $2 for it and he just taps the ears back flat on the block instead of tossing it, takes him maybe 10 minutes. I watched him do it and it came out pretty straight, way better than the $40 replacement I bought a while back. My grandpa used to fix everything like that, nothing got thrown out, just bent back into shape. Feels like now we all just order a new one the second something looks off. Anyway I got home and dug out an old bent portafilter I had in a drawer and gave it a shot. Anyone else here still tapping stuff straight instead of buying new?
