The bent paperclip trick I used for 2 years was backwards

I was using a bent paperclip to unclog the steam wand on my old Gaggia for ages. Some guy at a garage sale in Des Moines pointed out I was pushing the gunk further in, not pulling it out. Switched to a proper needle tool for 8 bucks and the wand has been clear since. Anyone else figure out they were fixing their gear the totally wrong way for way too long?
