Random guy at a flea market fixed my grinder with a zip tie
I was at a flea market outside Richmond last spring, carrying my old burr grinder that stopped feeding beans evenly. This older dude selling used tools waved me over, looked at it for maybe 10 seconds, and said "your drive gear is stripped, give me two minutes." He dug through a coffee can of odds and ends, found a small zip tie, cut it down, and wedged it inside the gear hub to add friction. It worked perfectly for another 6 months until I replaced the whole unit. I asked him why he bothered helping a stranger, and he just shrugged and said "nobody fixes stuff anymore, I like seeing it happen." That stuck with me because I usually default to buying new parts instead of hacking a fix together. Has anyone else had a stranger on the spot solve a coffee gear problem with random junk?
