Pro tip: a $3 bike tube patch fixed my portafilter basket rattle
I was reading a thread on a coffee forum last month where a guy mentioned sliding a thin rubber shim under the basket rim to kill the rattle in his machine. I had the same annoying buzz on my old Gaggia for about 4 months and figured it was just how the machine sounded. I cut a small strip from an old bike inner tube, trimmed it to about 1 inch long and a quarter inch wide, and pressed it under the lip of the basket before locking it in. The rattle is gone completely and the basket still seats fine with no leaks after two weeks of daily use. It cost me nothing since the tube was already in my junk drawer. Has anyone tried this with a bottomless portafilter or does the shim throw off the fit there?
