Found out my grandma's percolator hack from 1962 still beats my $40 press
I was cleaning out my grandma's kitchen in Toledo after she moved to a home, and I found her old percolator with a note taped to the bottom. The note said she used a folded paper towel rubber banded over the basket stem to catch the fine grit, and she claimed it cut sediment by half. I tried it with my camping percolator and honestly it works better than any mesh filter I've bought. Back when she started doing this, a pound of Folgers was like 60 cents, so nobody cared about wasting a scoop, but the grit was a real problem with those old grinders. Now I keep a stack of paper towels next to the stove and my French press sits in the cabinet. Has anyone else tried a paper towel wrap on a percolator basket, or am I just late to a trick everyone's grandma knew?
