Pro tip: watch a guy change brake pads in a Walmart parking lot in Amarillo, that one hour fixed 8 years of bad habits
I used to just crank lug nuts down as hard as I could with a breaker bar and call it done, because that's what my dad did in our driveway back in the 90s and nothing ever fell off. Then about 3 years ago I was heading to Denver and stopped at a Walmart outside Amarillo to grab snacks, and this older guy in the lot had a jack stand under his truck and was doing front pads on a Sunday afternoon with like 4 tools. He saw me watching and waved me over, showed me he torques his lugs to 85 ft lbs with a $20 click wrench so he doesn't warp rotors, and told me to grease the slide pins every single time or the pads wear uneven. I'd never once greased a slide pin in my life. Now I keep a torque wrench and a little packet of brake grease in my trunk kit, and my rotors finally stop lasting only 25k miles. It's funny how a random stranger in a parking lot can pass on more than years of just copying what you saw growing up. Did anybody else pick up a basic repair trick from a total stranger instead of a manual?
