Showerthought: my entire shed roof almost blew off because I used the wrong nails in a Kansas windstorm

I was finishing the roof on my backyard shed in Wichita last spring, using some cheap 1-inch nails I had leftover from a fence job. A week later, a storm ripped through and I watched from my kitchen window as half the shingles peeled right off. Who else has cut a corner on materials and paid for it immediately?

Yeah that's the worst feeling, watching it fail from your own window. I did something similar with deck screws once, used the wrong coating and they rusted out in like six months. The cheap stuff always costs more in the end when you have to do the job twice.

But is it really that big of a deal? It's just some rusty screws, not a safety issue. People get too worked up over small stuff.
