Tried the zip tie trick on my brake cable housing and it actually worked
My rear brake felt mushy for weeks and I was about to buy a new cable when a guy at the shop said to check if the housing was pulling out of the guide. Sure enough it was sliding forward on hard pulls, so I zip tied it to the frame near the second guide and the lever feels tight again. Cost me nothing and took 5 minutes, but now I'm wondering if I should just replace the housing anyway since it's probably stretched out.
Man, I know that mushy lever feeling and it's the worst. Had the same thing happen on my old commuter, the housing kept creeping out of the guide near the seat stay and I thought my pads were shot. Zip tie fix held up for months if I'm being honest, but when I finally swapped the housing the difference was night and day. Cable housing does wear out inside, the liner gets gummed up and the coiled stuff can fray, so even if it feels tight now it might still be dragging somewhere. For the price of a few feet of housing and a cable it's cheap peace of mind. Glad the free fix got you rolling again though, that shop guy saved you a few bucks.
