The shop on Valencia Street wanted $95 to true my wheel, so I bought a $22 spoke wrench instead
Walked into a bike shop on Valencia Street last month to get my rear wheel trued after a curb hit, and the guy quoted me $95 plus two days in the queue. That's more than the wheel cost me used. I went home, watched one 12 minute video, and spent $22 on a spoke wrench and a cheap truing stand off Craigslist. Took me three tries over an hour, but the wheel is straight and I know how to do it now. Honestly, shops like that are why people give up on riding, not because the work is actually hard. Anybody else taught themselves wheel truing, or am I going to regret skipping the shop?
