TIL the bubbles in my dish soap are just air, and I've been paying extra for them
Last week I was scraping dried egg off a pan and my soap was foaming up like crazy and I thought, wow, this stuff is really working. Then my wife sends me a link from a chemistry site that says the foam has almost nothing to do with cleaning. The stuff that actually lifts grease is the surfactant, and bubbles are just air trapped in water with a thin film around them. So I sat there looking at my sink full of white foam feeling like a sucker, because I have definitely grabbed the bottle with the biggest lather at the store more than once. Some brands even add foam boosters just so we think it is working harder, and I paid about $2 more for that bottle at a store in Tucson last month. I tested it with a cheap basic soap that barely foams and the pan came out just as clean, maybe cleaner. Now I want to know, has anyone else switched to a low foam soap on purpose and actually liked it better?
