The guesthouse owner in Chiang Mai made fun of my laptop setup and I switched to a tablet
I was working from a cafe near Tha Phae Gate for 3 weeks when the owner, a guy named Somchai, pointed at my laptop and said "that thing makes you look like a tourist, not a worker." I laughed it off at first but then realized he was right, I was hauling a 5 pound brick everywhere and getting robbed on weight at every flight. Switched to a tablet with a small keyboard and now I work from cafes in Da Nang and nobody gives me a second look. Curious if anyone else downsized their gear after a random local comment?
Reminds me of when I was in Lisbon and this old guy at a pastelaria kept staring at my giant backpack every morning. One day he just goes "you move house every day?" and points at the straps digging into my shoulders. I ended up mailing half my stuff home and bought a little daypack the next week. His comment bugged me way more than it should have but he was totally right.
