Guadalajara coworking space with 40 Mbps upload was a lie
I booked a coworking desk in Guadalajara for 3 weeks based on their site promising 40 Mbps upload for video calls. First day, my Zoom kept freezing and the host said they cap uploads at 8 Mbps during peak hours. I learned to always ask for a speed test screenshot before paying a deposit, and now I carry a cheap portable router with a local SIM as backup. Has anyone else gotten burned by coworking spaces overselling their internet in Mexico or elsewhere? What do you do to verify before you commit?

The 8 Mbps cap thing is real but it's usually not the space lying on purpose, it's that most Mexican ISPs sell "symmetrical" plans that are not actually symmetrical during peak hours. Telmex and Izzi both throttle upload hard in the evenings in cities like Guadalajara and CDMX, so the coworking owner might genuinely think they have 40 up because that's what they get at 7am. The speed test screenshot is smart but it has to be done at the same time of day you plan to work, otherwise it means nothing. Also that portable router with a local SIM is a good move, but check the carrier first because Telcel caps hotspot data on most prepaid plans while ATT and Movistar are more relaxed about it.
