Wrote off fuel additives for 15 years, then a water-in-fuel problem in my shop changed my mind
I always figured diesel fuel additives were snake oil, just something the parts store pushes on guys who don't know better. Last spring a customer's 2019 Ram 2500 came in running rough, and I pulled the water separator to find the bowl full of cloudy fuel that smelled off. A tech I trust at the shop in Abilene told me to try a bottle of a diesel fuel treatment before I went pulling injectors, and I figured what the heck, it's $12. Two days later the truck smoothed out and the fuel in the bowl looked clean. I'm not saying it fixes everything, but I stopped laughing at the guys running it every fill up. What additives are you all actually running, and do you dose every tank or just when a truck sits?
I read somewhere that the water in diesel comes from condensation and additives with a demulsifier help drop it out so the separator can actually catch it. Sounds like that's exactly what happened to your bowl.
