Tried the dollar store zip ties on a charge pipe boot, and one let go at 22 psi on the test drive
I was doing a quick fix on my 2006 Ram 2500 last week and ran out of good zip ties, so I grabbed a pack of 50 from the dollar store for a buck. I used four of them to hold a boost boot on the cold side pipe because I just needed to get the truck home. Took it out on the highway and got into the throttle, and at 22 psi one of them snapped clean in half and the boot popped off right by the firewall. Sounded like a shotgun and I limped it back on a 4 mile tow that cost me $75. The funny part is the other three ties held fine, so it was just that one bad one in the batch. Lesson learned, cheap ties work for wiring but not for anything holding boost. Any of you got a go-to brand of zip ties that actually hold up to heat and pressure?
Wrapped the boot with a couple of the heavy duty black ties from Home Depot after my cheap ones did the same thing on my 7.3, and they held 25 psi no problem. The trick was using two wide ones instead of four skinny ones so there is less stretch on each. Just grab the ones rated for outdoor use since they handle heat way better than the dollar store junk.
