How do you guys decide when it's worth the cash to upgrade your main diagnostic gear?

Honestly, how often are you really running into those deep Ford-specific issues? For a lot of us weekend guys, a good generic tool that reads and clears codes is all we ever touch. Spending thousands just feels like buying insurance for a problem you might never have.
