A trucker in a Wyoming snowstorm told me to always carry two spare fuel filters, not one, and now I won't leave the shop without them.

That's solid advice for a real emergency. A second filter is cheap insurance when you're stranded and the first one clogs. Smart truckers learn from the worst conditions.

and that pattern is, a lot of the best advice comes from people who have been in the worst situations. you don't learn to carry two filters from a sunny day on a smooth highway. it's the same reason experienced mechanics keep spare hoses and belts in their trucks, not just the one. that extra filter is cheaper than a tow truck and a night in a freezing cab, and it shows the difference between just being prepared and being ready for things to actually break.

Honestly that makes total sense. I mean, my version of being stranded is when the drive-thru line is too long, so maybe I should take notes. But for real, getting stuck with a clogged filter in a blizzard sounds like a nightmare. That extra one is probably the difference between a bad story and a really, really bad night.
