Vent: the bus shelter on 5th in Eugene has a bench you can't sit on, who approves this stuff
I was waiting for the 42 in Eugene last Tuesday in the rain and finally noticed why nobody sits at that new shelter on 5th. The bench is there, but it's maybe 18 inches off the ground and angled so your knees end up above your hips. I tried it for two minutes and my back was done. Turns out the city picked it from a catalog to stop people from sleeping there, and I get the problem, I really do, but now a 70 year old with a bad knee has to stand in the drizzle too. The kicker is the whole redesign cost around $35,000 per stop and they didn't ask one regular rider what we needed. Design that treats everyone like a problem to solve just pushes people back into cars. Who actually signs off on these shelter layouts, and is there a public comment step I'm missing? I want to bring this up at the next transit meeting but I need to know where the decisions really get made.
