Rant: Found a 'free VPN' ad on a bus and it made my skin crawl

I saw this ad in Chicago yesterday for a free VPN that promised 'unlimited speed forever.' We all know the real cost is your browsing history and bandwidth for their partner trackers. Has anyone actually vetted a free service that doesn't sell data, or do we just accept that nothing's actually free?
