Picked a password manager after two weeks of testing - went with the open source one
I spent two weeks comparing Bitwarden against 1Password. Bitwarden won because I could self-host the server on an old laptop in my basement for zero monthly cost. The interface is a little clunkier than 1Password, but I sleep better knowing my vault isn't sitting on someone else's cloud. Anyone else run their own password server or am I overcomplicating things?

Did the exact same thing about a year ago with Bitwarden and a Raspberry Pi sitting behind my router... the setup took an afternoon but once it was running I haven't touched it since. Self hosting gives me peace of mind knowing I'm not relying on some company's security promises or potential data breaches. The interface is definitely not as pretty as 1Password but for the price of free and full control over my data I can live with some clunky menus. I also like being able to run backups of the database file on my own schedule without worrying about export limits or proprietary formats. Only thing I'd suggest is making sure you have a solid backup plan for that old laptop in case the drive dies unexpectedly.
