A fake invoice email hit my work inbox and the thing that caught it was one weird detail
Last Tuesday around 9am I was sorting mail at the station in Boise when I checked my phone and saw an email saying I owed $340 for a package redelivery. It looked legit at first, right logo, right colors, but the sender address was off by one letter and the link went to a random site. I didn't click it, I forwarded it to our IT guy and he confirmed it was a phishing attempt going around. What got me was how normal it looked, no typos, no weird grammar, just a slightly wrong domain. Now I hover over every link before touching it, takes 2 seconds. Has anyone else seen these fake shipping fee emails getting better lately?
Expect these things to keep getting better and the "check the sender" advice is already dying. Spoofing a domain costs nothing now, so a lot of these come from a real address that looks totally fine, and the one letter off thing is old school. The link hiding thing barely works either since half of them just load a fake login page that copies the real site pixel for pixel. Boise or not, you got lucky that this one was lazy, the smart ones don't bother with $340 redelivery scams, they wait and hit you with something bigger. Hovering over links gives you a false sense of safety and that's the real danger here.
