Why does nobody talk about the passport rule for closed-loop cruises out of Seattle?
I was booking a 4 day run to Victoria and back out of Seattle for my sister's birthday and the agent mentioned that a passport card is fine for this route but a passport book is needed the second you touch a foreign port. I always assumed any cruise leaving the US needed the full book, so hearing the card works on these closed-loop trips caught me off guard. Has anyone here done a short Pacific Northwest sailing with just the card, and did the boarding folks give you any grief?
Skip the card and just bring the book anyway, because the card only works if the ship actually clears the right paperwork for a closed-loop trip and one small change to the route can leave you stuck at the pier. I have seen people get turned away over this stuff even when the rules say they are fine, and a passport book removes that whole risk in one move. Save yourself the stress and carry the full book even if the card is technically allowed.
