Rant: my neighbor's weird yard ritual finally clicked for me

Old man across the street would walk his property line every night at 11 PM with a flashlight, even when nothing was there. Last week I noticed a guy scoping out houses with a phone camera, and realized the ritual was actually a security patrol. Has anyone else had a neighbor with a habit that turned out to be practical once you figured it out?
