Pro tip: I spent 6 hours trying to write a villain's motivation and it was one dumb line that fixed it
Honestly, I kept hearing how you gotta build this deep backstory for your antagonist, make them sympathetic, all that. So I spent 6 hours weaving this tragic past about my fantasy warlord losing his family to plague. But when I read it back, he still felt like a cardboard cutout. I was about to scrap the whole thing until my buddy said 'why not just have him believe the kingdom owes him because he saved the queen's dog that one time?' That single dumb selfish reason clicked everything into place in like 20 minutes. Now I think all those complex motivation tips people push just make your villain sound like a therapist's patient instead of a real jerk. Has anyone else found that a petty reason worked better than a grand one for their characters?

sympathetic" is overrated... villains are just people who pick dumb hills to die on.
